Two archrivals face off on Friday in Round 13 of the 2022 AFL season, as Essendon and Carlton go head-to-head at the spiritual home of footy, the MCG.

These teams have had polar opposite levels of success thus far this campaign, however the Bombers will be fired up to make a statement.

Essendon vs Carlton at the MCG (Carlton -18.5, 164.5)

Weather

It’s been a miserable old week in Melbourne however there is a fair chance that the skies will be clear for this game. Even if rain does come, the MCG drains very well.

Where to Attack?

With just one game on this slate, there aren’t many trends to work with.

Essendon have had a woeful season to date and as such forwards have feasted on their vulnerable defence, scoring well. Both tall and small forwards have had success, so a few Carlton names could be in for a big night.

Game Script – Carlton forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Caleb Marchbank ($6,000)

Marchbank’s return is one of the good news stories of this year, the defender having not played an AFL game since 2019. In the three seasons prior to he averaged no less than 54, so a value return is far from unlikely.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jack Martin ($8,790)

Martin returns this week after an injury layoff and gets a prime matchup against the struggling Bombers. While he can be injury prone, Martin has a great floor and couple of goals should see him go above 70 which is a decent return on this slate.

Peter Wright ($8,910)

This one may go against the game script, but Wright has had a good year and comes up against a Carlton side missing its star defender Jacob Weitering. Wright has a good chance to get on top in the air and has kicked 4 or more goals three times this season.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Patrick Cripps ($14,330)

After a hot start to the year Cripps cooled heading into his bye, failing to score 100 for three games in a row. Despite that, he has averaged 102.3 including an injury impacted score and should be better for the week off, so I back him to return to premium scoring ways on Friday.
