Round 17 of the 2022 AFL season draws to a close with three big fixtures on Sunday, featuring competition heavyweights Brisbane and Carlton.

The Lions will be without several of their stars when they face Essendon at the Gabba, while the Blues get their turn to beat up on the Eagles at Optus Stadium.

In the other game, Hawthorn have the chance to reverse a poor run of form against Adelaide at Marvel Stadium.

Draftstars have put up $75k in the main contest, as well as a couple of live final qualifier contests.

Weather

Brisbane

Perth

Clear conditions await in Melbourne (although under the Marvel Stadium roof) and Brisbane, however up to 4mm of rain has been forecast for Perth so keep an eye on the radar in the lead up to the final game of the round. Optus tends to drain well, so don’t let the possibility of rain turn you away from West Coast or Carlton options.

Where to Attack?

Shootouts are predicted this Sunday, setting up the possibility of a high scoring slate in DFS. There are plenty of avenues to target! Let's take a closer look at our AFL Data Tools to find any trends that might help us construct winning lineups on Draftstars for this match.

The Daily Fantasy Rankings Points Against tool shows that midfielders love to feast on both Hawthorn and West Coast. Inside players particularly thrive against the undersized Hawks midfield, so you can look to Adelaide’s numerous options in the position. The Eagles have been slightly less leaky as their form has improved, however Carlton still have an imposing midfield which should get on top in Perth.

While Ned Reeves has taken over the mantle of lead ruck at Hawthorn, he hasn’t managed to stop opposing big men from scoring big in fantasy. Adelaide’s ruck, Reilly O’Brien, has been in good form lately so he may be a highly owned option today.

Game Script – Adelaide midfielders, ruck

VALUE PLAYS

Eric Hipwood ($6,500)

The DFR Points Against tables show that Essendon struggle to contain opposition forwards, and Eric Hipwood is at a bargain basement price this week. He has slowly built form since returning from injury and produced a 66 last week, which would be value at this price point.

MID-PRICED PLAYS

Brandon Starcevich ($9,860)

Brisbane’s backline has been decimated heading into this weekend, so who will pick up the pieces on Sunday? The top three Lions kick-in takers are all missing for this clash against Essendon, which leaves Starcevich at #4 to take on increased responsibility. I can see him getting a nice boost to an already handy recent average of 74.3 points here.

Harry McKay ($10,440)

West Coast have struggled against key forwards all year and it is about time that Harry McKay got off the leash. In his last uninterrupted game against the Eagles he scored 93 and is coming off an 85 against the Saints last week. That kind of return at this price point would be fantastic!

PREMIUM PLAYS

Rory Laird ($17,550)

Rory Laird has been an ever-reliable premium option this season and will enjoy an excellent matchup this Sunday against the Hawks. The superstar displayed his ceiling last week, scoring 136 points against the Demons, his best effort of the season.

Lachie Neale ($17,010)

There will be plenty of headaches on this slate as coaches try to pick between Laird and Neale or fit both in their line-ups. Neale has destroyed the Bombers historically, averaging over 140 in his last matches against them. The Brownlow Medallist also loves playing at the Gabba, hitting 110+ in his last five games at the venue.
