The final round of the AFL Premiership Season for 2022 is here and we kick things off this Friday night with a critical matchup between two of the sides many would have expected to be playing off in the grand final before the season started. Brisbane will host Melbourne at the Gabba with the winner all but guaranteeing themselves a spot in the top four and the loser potentially falling all the way to 6th place.

Weather

There are absolutely no weather concerns for this matchup beyond the usual night time dew that can arise on a warm night in Brisbane. Let's play some fantasy football!

Where to Attack?

Let's take a closer look at our AFL Data Tools to find any trends that might help us construct winning lineups on Draftstars for this match.

The single point of attack that stands out in this game is defenders against Melbourne. This is nothing new as the Demons have structured up to concede points to their opponent’s backs and have given up the most points to the position all year. Brisbane tend to build up their attack across half back, especially at home and this link up play should lead to their midfielders picking up outside possessions as well.

Game Script –  Brisbane backs and outside midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Rhys Mathieson ($7,620) continues his resurgent season averaging 79 fantasy points per game from his last 5 matches, which would be over 10x his current price point. He continues to get opportunities through the midfield, ranging from around 20-40% centre bounce attendances over the same period. The inside midfield is the only other position that Melbourne concede above the league average for fantasy points as well, which will play into Beast Modes game style.

Harris Andrews ($7,730) is another positive value play on a single game slate where they will be hard to pinpoint. This is primarily a matchup play, as noted above the Demons give up 74 points per player to defenders this season, which is almost 9 points above the league average. When these two sides met earlier in the season, Andrews delivered with a season high 88 fantasy points, taking 12 marks.

MID-PRICE PLAY

Daniel Rich ($12,930) is the premium defender I will be stacking other Lions backs with. He essentially takes 100% of the Lions kick-ins when he plays and the Demons give up an astronomical amount of points to the opponents designated kicker. When they met earlier this season he posted 112 fantasy points, and given it was the last time this season he scored 100+, his price had dipped to the very affordable $12k range.

PREMIUM PLAY

Max Gawn ($15,090) is right back into career form posting scores of 115, 152, and 133 from his last four games. He continues to attend the majority of the centre bounces at around 70% and despite the fact that Oscar has been relatively stingy this season Gawn hasn’t gone under 100 fantasy points from his last four games against Brisbane, which include 135 fantasy point games on the last two occasions.

Christian Petracca ($14,260) has seen his centre bounce attendances reduce in recent weeks as Angus Brayshaw as moved from half back to his old position in the midfield. That said, Petracca has still posted scores of 120 and 110 from his last three games, showing massive upside for what is a low price point for him. For the Demons to win I expect Petracca to hit the scoreboard while he is up forward so will be linking him up with Demons forwards in my lineups.
