Hartnell

All eyes will be on Randwick this Saturday for Day 1 of the Championships and one of the best days racing in Australia. There are 4 Group 1s on the card featuring the ATC Derby for the staying 3yos, the Doncaster Mile, the TJ Smith Stakes for the sprinters and the Inglis Sires for the 2yos. There is also a meeting at Caulfield in Victoria where there looks to be a couple of nice races for tournament players to get involved in.

SportChamps is the leading provider of fantasy horse racing tournaments and they offer a range of tournaments to suit all budgets. Their major tournaments are run on a Saturday with rebuy and no-rebuy options across the major metropolitan venues. Their offering for Day 1 of the Championships is a $15,000 guaranteed contest for only a $10 entry with 1 rebuy, as well as a $5,000 guaranteed for a $100 entry, also with 1 rebuy. For those not willing to spend a whole day in a big contest, they run consistent hour-long contests across a range of races. They also offer free to enter games which can be a great way to try the site out with no financial risk.

Moneyball and TopBetta also offer a smaller suite of contests but their rule variations and smaller fields mean the options are plenty for those wanting to play tournaments and we recommend you try out the different sites and options to find out which ones work for you.

We can kick the day off at Caulfield in Race 4 where there looks to be a good thing going around. The Phillip Stokes trained Mr Quickie is 2 from 2 this preparation and looks a most promising horse. He comes off a dominant last start win at Mornington and this race looks no tougher. He should settle back in the field but with the rail out it should be no disadvantage to come down the middle and will be mighty hard to hold out. He is currently $1.85 with BetEasy and looks a good bank builder.

Up to Randwick and Race 5 is a key Sydney Cup lead up and like most staying races in Sydney Chris Waller looks to have a big hand in the race. I'm keen to be with one of his runners in Shraaoh who comes off a last start 3rd in a similar race last start. He should be better for that run over 2400m and will appreciate the slightly firmer track on Saturday. Kerrin McEvoy should put him in a prominent position from an inside gate and he looks very hard to hold out. He is currently $5.00 with Sportsbet.

Neds

Back to Caulfield and Race 7 is for the older sprinters and has drawn together a handy field. I'm looking towards the top of the weights here and a couple of horses that are in great form and should be able to get good runs on the speed. Streets Of Avalon comes off a last start win in a feature sprint at Mornington where he sat outside the leader and proved too good. He should receive a similar run here and will be a hard horse to get past. He is currently $4.80 with Neds. The other horse I like is Ashlor who is a month between runs and took the scalp of Widgee Turf last start who has won since. He too can sit right on the speed and he rarely goes around without being in the finish. He is currently $5.50 with Pointsbet. Both horses can be backed and I'm quite confident that you should find the winner between them.

Race 8 at Randwick is the TJ Smith Stakes for the sprinters and it has drawn together a great field. There looks to be plenty of pressure on paper in this race and that should suit the Godolphin runner Osborne Bulls. He will settle back in the field but providing you can run on and make ground down the side he looks well placed considering he probably has the best finishing burst of any horse in Australia not named Winx. He is currently $4.80 with Neds. His main danger looks to be the Freedman trained Santa Ana Lane. He comes off a great run in the Newmarket with a big weight and the stable are great grand final trainers. He too will settle back in the field but as he has shown on many occasions over the past 12-18 months he has a big finish. Ideally he would like the track to dry out so if it is no worse than a Soft 6 he comes right into play. He is currently $7.50 with BetEasy.

Race 9 at Randwick is the time honoured Doncaster Mile, widely regarded as one of Australia's great races each year. As always a big field will face the starter with a big spread in the weights. I'm looking to the top of the weights and the Godolphin warhorse Hartnell. He won the Spring equivalent of this race, The Epsom, 6 months ago and looks to at least be going as good now. He comes off a 2nd in the All Star Mile to gun filly Mystic Journey where he was held up for a run at a vital stage. The sting out of the track shouldn't faze him and he gets the services of gun jockey Hugh Bowman. He is currently $9.50 with Sportsbet
