TPC San Antonio – Valero Texas Open

Set amongst native of the Oaks of Texas Hill Country, the par 72 7,435 yard TPC San Antonio course hosts the penultimate PGA tour event before the Masters at Augusta next week. Whilst most golfers tend to skip the event before the hunt for the green jacket, a nice field has assembled in Texas to take on this long course. Course history suggests that not many low scores are the norm, so we need to focus on birdie avoidance than birdies of better this week. The event is famous for Kevin Na’s fight with the rocks and underbrush back in 2011. Check out his meltdown which is a delight for us mediocre golfers of the world.

DraftKings have posted a $400,000 Drive the Green contest for a $5 entry. Check out the various satellites for next week’s Masters contests as well. Moneyball have their usual $500.00 contest for a $10 entry and PlayOn have a $1,000 contest for a $11USD entry.

One tip this week is to keep an eye on withdrawals for the tournament. Whilst a minimum amount of golfers who qualified for the Masters are here, that number can dwindle just before tee off for the tournament.

Let’s have a look at I am targeting for the Valero:

Tony Finau ($10,800 DK) – Finau is my key target for this contest as I see Finau needing to fine tune before Augusta. Has been a bit of hit or miss but has finished the last 3 tour events in the Top 25. Also finished T3 back in 2017 at this course. Ranks very well for scrambling and bogey avoidance this season and personally would like to see him in the Winner’s circle when Augusta comes around.

Aaron Baddeley ($8,300 DK) – Bads is on a heater now with a 7thplace finish at the event at the Corales last week and a runner up at the Puerto Rico open. Whilst these two events are a “2ndtier” events, this will give Baddeley confidence that his game is good enough in bigger events. Baddeley is strong on the scrambling and bogey avoidance and his course history is very strong (4 top 20 finishes in the event).

Luke List ($8,000 DK) – Will be a chalky play at this salary, List is the number 1 player ranked in the field for strokes off the tee and 12th in the field for Birdies or better. His bogey avoidance is a low 122nd which does make him a GPP play only. Just a great salary this week for List which it makes him hard to get away with.

Carlos Ortiz ($6,500 DK) – A big bomber of the tee, Ortiz is my value play for the weekend. With these long par 5’s at San Antonio, Ortiz is capable in reaching these in two and getting looks at eagles or birdies. Boom or bust I’d say!

Jason Kokrak ($9,400 DK) - Now I am big Kokrak fan, who every time I pick him is always playing Sunday and finishing with a great fantasy score. But there is a time for regress and when the ownership is going to be very high on Kokrak (I am expecting the highest % on the slate), we can pivot away to golfers such as Jim Furyk ($9,600 DK) and Ryan Moore ($9,100 DK) who will be a low ownership but with the same upside.
